What is the Hispanic College Institute (HCI)?

At the Hispanic College Institute (HCI) approximately 150 Hispanic high school students are selected from across the Commonwealth come together on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA for a four-day, three-night pre-college empowerment program where they learn to overcome both real and perceived barriers to college access. The HCI is completely free of cost for student participants, thanks to our sponsors. Our students participate in:

  • College and career workshops

  • Networking with Hispanic professionals from various fields

  • Meeting with college admissions officers

  • Learning about conflict management and civic engagement

  • Interacting with near- peer mentors

  • Listening to inspirational speakers

  • Competing for scholarships

VALHEN strives to be an equitable organization for our Virginia students. Program participants may only attend one VALHEN program per year and are encouraged to only apply to the program they most align with. Once a selected student confirms their participation (see instructions on selection email) they will have a spot in the program that accepted them. If they do not confirm within the timeline, the spot will be given to to the next student on the waiting list. Students may not attend the same program more than once.

For more information, contact us at hci@valhen.org.

Did you receive a scholarship at the HCI? The HCI Scholarships are for college expenses and are sent directly to your higher ed institution in Virginia. Fill out the Scholarship Request (one time only, unless you have a renewable scholarship, which would need to be requested one time yearly).

We want to thank our amazing team of volunteers and our special guests and sponsors, for helping make HCI a success every year!
