Nominations open for Hispanic Research Issues SIG in Research in Elementary, Secondary or Postsecondary Education Award

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS. The Hispanic Research Issues SIG is requesting nominations for its Research in Elementary, Secondary or Postsecondary Education Award 2010 to be presented at the 2010 AERA Annual Meeting in Denver to recognize outstanding research in Hispanic Issues in Education. Valued will be research using any type of methodology or paradigms which represent research contributions in elementary, secondary, or postsecondary levels of education pertaining to Hispanic/Latino issues and concerns. Self nominations are encouraged. Members may submit more than one nomination.

CRITERIA. Criteria include the following: 1) a significant publication or set of publications that has/have had outreach to researchers, educators, policy makers and others and which has made an important contribution in the area of Latino/Hispanic issues and education; 2) service in Latina/o (Hispanic) communities, AERA, and other visible domains which has contributed to improving Hispanic education, and; 3) active membership and role in AERA (and the Hispanic Research Issues SIG).

Nominations will be accepted from any member of AERA. Members of AERA may nominate themselves for the award. The award will be given on the basis of contributions in scholarship, professional standing, and community outreach dealing with “Hispanic Issues” and not on the basis of seniority or whether or not a nominee is Latina/o (Hispanic).

NOMINATIONS. Nominations should include a current vita and a statement (no more than 500 words) that discusses why the individual nominated should receive the award. The statements should include publication(s) written by the nominee and a statement about their significance for Latina/o (Hispanic) education.

Submission should be sent to: Lisa Carvallo at lisa.carvallo@montgomerycollege.edu no later than March 3, 2010 to be considered for this year’s award.

SELECTION PROCESS. The five Award Committee members will review the documentation for each candidate submitted and rate each criterion listed above on a scale from 1 to 5 (outstanding = 5; very good = 4; good =3; fair = 2; and poor =1). Each candidate will receive an overall score based on the ratings for the three criteria. The committee will make a recommendation to the executive board based on the nominee receiving the highest ratings. The award recipient will be announced at the Hispanic Research Issues SIG meeting at AERA in Denver.

The award recipient will receive a plaque, $200.00, and a two-year membership in the Hispanic Research Issues SIG.
